Programme Overview:

The Bachelor of Visual Arts begins with a generic first year of study. On successful completion of this year students apply for selection into either the Fine Art or the Design stream. The first-year programme provides a broad base of skills and competencies that includes visual literacy, creative problem solving, design skills, sound drafting skills, some technical and technological proficiency; the ability to work in an extended range of media, both traditional and non- traditional, and appropriate experience at developing concepts and realising these in both two- and three- dimensional form; the ability to function as part of a team and the ability to articulate concepts both visually and verbally. The Design streams include: • Fashion and Textiles • Graphic Design • Photography The Fine Art streams include: • Drawing • Ceramics • Painting • Printmaking • Sculpture

Subjects requirements:

• Minimum statutory NSC requirements for degree entry must be met. • Qualifying applicants will be required to prepare a prescribed portfolio, and attend an interview. Numbers are limited for this programme. The portfolio is the leading indicator. RECOMMENDED NSC/IEB SUBJECTS: • Visual Arts • Design Neither of these two subjects are prerequisites for admission.

Dip (Economics)

The objective of this programme is to educate persons with an interest in Economics to pursue careers in assisting economic research and economic report writing in public and private sector institutions; the latter including, amongst others, economic journalism.

Part-time 2 years

AdvDip (Quality)

The purpose of this programme is to equip students with knowledge and advanced skills to be able to determine and manage the effectiveness of quality management systems, appraise the current systems and processes, identify problem areas, and possess the skills to assist in the minimisation of the problem areas identified. This qualification offers an intensive, focused and applied specialisation which meets the need of a specific niche in the labour market. This programme is suitable for continuing professional development through the inculcation of a deep and systematic understanding of current thinking, practice, theory, and methodology, in the area of quality management and systems.

Full-time 1 year

HCert (Renewable Energy Engineering)

This programme provides an introduction to Sustainable Energy and Renewable Energy Technologies. The course includes carefully selected applied Mathematics, Science and Engineering content to fast-track learning to the required level. The purpose of this programme is to equip students with the necessary skills to function in a supporting role to an engineering team in the renewable energy sector comprising artisans, technicians, technologists, and engineers. Successful candidates meeting prescribed criteria, may apply for admission to BEngTech, BEng and other degrees offered at the university.
