BEd: Senior Phase and Further Education &Training (SP: Grades 7-9) (FET: Grades 10-12) NATURAL SCIENCE STREAM

Programme Overview:

The aim of the programme is to equip students with the knowledge, skills and values needed to effectively mediate learning in the field of Senior Phase and Further Education and Training, specialising in specific school subjects. Students will be expected to choose two FET specialisations and one related SP specialisation within the stream below. NATURAL SCIENCE STREAM: FET: Life Sciences, Physical Sciences*, Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy SP: Mathematics, Natural Sciences *Please note that students choosing to study Physical Science MUST choose Mathematics as their second FET specialisation. To specialise in Mathematical Literacy applicants must have taken Mathematics at school.

Subjects requirements:

• Minimum NSC requirements for degree entry must be met. • English (Home Language or First Additional Language) AND Afrikaans or isiXhosa (Home Language or First Additional Language). • Mathematics – 60% Please note that in order to specialise in any of the following FET specialisations, an applicant must have taken the subject up to Gr 12 level and passed at the percentage (%) indicated below: • Physical Sciences – 60%, • Life Sciences – 60%, • Geography – 55%.

The Bachelor of Education Senior Phase (SP) and Further Education & Training (FET) degree has the primary purpose of providing a well-rounded education that equips graduates with the required subject content knowledge base; educational theory, and methodology that will enable them to demonstrate competence and responsibility as academic and professionally qualified beginner secondary school teachers.

Dip (Building)

The Building and Construction Industry is a dynamic industry with many opportunities for self-motivated and hardworking people. The industry is becoming more technically sophisticated and computerised industry which has resulted in a growing demand for suitably trained professionals. This course deals with the methods, materials and techniques used in the construction industry. Two years of this three-year programme are spent doing full-time study at the university, and one year in industry undergoing experiential learning. Please note: As a limited number of students can be admitted, admission is subject to selection based on academic merit. The selection is undertaken by the Department of Building and Human Settlement Development.

Dip (Tourism Management) Extended Curriculum* *(also offered in Gqeberha).

The extended curriculum programme for Diploma studies provides alternative university access to students who have the potential to succeed, but do not meet the minimum admission requirements for the mainstream programme. The purpose of the programme is to integrate additional academic support and skills development with mainstream courses to prepare the student for successful completion of the relevant Diploma.

This programme provides the student with the broad expertise necessary to assume responsibility for effective and efficient planning, organising, implementation and control of the logistics activities, which are required to supply goods and services of the right quality to users within the supply chain at optimum cost.
